SANTA MARÍA DE CANÁ CHURCH & FOUNDATION CENTER

Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid)
NEW BUILD | Church Duration: 12 months

Landmark project built by Cabbsa in Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid), consisting of the Church of Santa María de Caná and the Caná Foundation (a recently constructed extension), a complex that stands as a benchmark in modern religious architecture, particularly for its use of brick as a distinctive construction element in contemporary architecture.

The Church of Santa María de Caná, designed by architect Fernando Higueras, stands out for its innovative use of brick, creating architectural forms that enhance internal acoustics and fully exploit the material’s plastic qualities. The cantilevered terraces with protective overhangs produce dynamic plays of light and shadow through vertical or curved recesses, forming pendentives in the entrance portico, the chapels, and the transept.

Recently, Cabbsa also built the Caná Foundation Center, a care facility for people with disabilities which, although a project of different scale, follows the same brickwork aesthetic as the church. The project was executed in full compliance with the requirements regarding the removal of architectural barriers and appropriate lighting levels, providing the foundation with pleasant, functional spaces to carry out its support work for people with disabilities.
